Q: What is a refurbished/recycled license key?

A refurbished key is a license that has already been used to install/activate a particular software package. For example, on a laptop in a business environment. In most cases, the laptops are written off within 3-5 years, which means that the laptop needs to be replaced. A new laptop usually includes a new license code for the operating system, for example. The license code on the old laptop can then be reused/activated.

Q: Why do I get a Microsoft Piracy Warning?

Unfortunately, not all refurbished licenses are reactivated correctly. This may cause you to receive the standard Microsoft warning for software piracy. 

Q: Why doesn't my license work immediately?

Dajema sells refurbished licenses. These licenses were previously activated, but because of the replacement of the pc/laptop, these licenses are now no longer active. The license will have to be reactivated. In some cases, this 'reactivation' may not go right away. In 90% of the cases where it doesn't work out right away, the license will still come into effect after a re-activation by phone. 

Of course you will receive a guarantee that the license works 100%!

So you never run the risk that you pay, but you end up with a non-working license!

Q: Why did you fail to reactivate the first time?

Microsoft's focus is on selling the latest software products. As a result, the reactivation of used licenses is not always given the right priority.

Note: Did you use Office 365 for this? Preferably create a NEW Microsoft Account. A small number of our customers experience activation problems because Office 365 is linked to your account at the same time as our license. This problem is difficult to solve! Make sure that Office 365 is properly removed and create a new Microsoft Account. This can be done with an existing e-mail address, see installation instructions below.

Q: Where can I enter the product code?

Office 365, Office 2019, Office 2016 and Office 2013 (PC and Mac)

Step 1: Go to www.office.com/setup

Step 2: Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create an account if you don't have one. Remember this account, so you can install or reinstall Office later without a product key.

Important: If you are renewing an Office 365 subscription, enter the Microsoft account associated with your subscription. I forgot my Microsoft account.

Step 3: Enter your Office product key, without bars.

Step 4: Follow the instructions to complete the redemption process.

Sometimes it is necessary to use the option Activate by phone. 

In the activation window you choose for telephone activation.

Q: What is a license guarantee?

Q: Why is refurbished software cheaper than regular software?

Microsoft makes firm agreements with its sales channel regarding the sale of new software packages. As a result, these points of sale are bound by these price agreements.  We sell refurbished software, which comes from used PCs and therefore no longer falls under the Microsoft sales policy. This allows us to have a more flexible pricing policy. 

Q: What are MSDN Licenses?

Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) licenses are rights granted to developers who work with Microsoft products for the purpose of testing software. These licenses are in some cases provided free of charge and have no commercial value. The use of MSDN licenses is therefore strictly prohibited for companies and individuals and can lead to high fines!

Q: Is selling refurbished/recycled software legal?

The reselling of software (especially Microsoft products) in Europe is completely legal and also approved by the European Court on April 24, 2012.

Below and in the weblink provided, you can read about what and what the court ruled in this case. In short, it boils down to the fact that end users in Europe purchase the software package including the right of ownership, in which case only the right of use of the software package is purchased against end users in America.

In Europe, the software package is therefore entirely in the possession of the buying party, so that the ownership of the purchased software in America remains with Microsoft.

The European Union Court of Justice has recently taken a milestone decision in favor of the commercialization of second hand software licenses of any kind. According to this, once a software seller or distributor sells a copy of any software tool, it automatically loses its exclusive rights to distribution, making it completely legal for companies and individuals to re-sell their own copies, legitimating this niche market for companies such as the German based UsedSoft, the company that took the case to the European Court.

In addition, it is clearly stated in the Court decision that no difference could be applied between physical media and download products. “It makes no difference whether the copy of the computer program was made available by means of a download from the right holder’s website or by means of a material medium such as a CD-ROM or DVD,” the court ruled. “Even if the right holder formally separates the customer’s right to use the copy of the program supplied from the operation of transferring the copy of the program to the customer on a material medium, the operation of downloading from that medium a copy of the computer program and that of concluding a license agreement remain inseparable from the point of view of the acquirer.”

The transfer of property of the licenses also implies the transfer of the legal obligations stablished for both parts, including maintenance and upgrades, also meaning that multiple user licenses for instance cannot be split and sold separately, since the original conditions would still apply in case of a re-sell.

 

However, this decision only affects the European markets, since previous Court decisions in the United States followed a completely different direction. In the precedent-setting case Vernor vs. Autodesk, it was established that US buyers purchase the ability to use a license, but they do not own the software, making redistribution not legally possible. This does not prevent American users to purchase licenses outside the USA, although the legality of such possibility is still unclear.

Nevertheless, this European Court decision has a huge importance for companies, since it eliminates the distinction between the purchase of a license and the purchase of a product. The implications of this measure for international trade and intellectual property legislation on the long term still would need to be further discussed, but on the short term the cost-saving potential for European organizations is undoubtedly very important. We will see in the future the real impact that the opening of this market has for European Union based companies.
